  1. Electrical Inspector Says:

You can build your own wood stove, if you can get it, and all of its components to pass a Field Evaluation by UL, WH, FMA, or any of the other "NRTL"s that test products for compliance to UL, ANSI, ASTM, OSHA, NFPA, or any other of a LONG list of US Standards. (The EPA has nothing at all to do with it.)

[Or, if you want to avoid getting a permit for the work (and live across the street from a fire station - buy lots of hot dogs and marshmallows).]

Other than that, purchase a "Listed" unit, and use only accessories listed for use with that stove, and for the installation you are doing.

Rules and regulations have gotten to the point nobody builds their own wood stoves anymore. The last homebuilt one I had I had to change immediately when my insurance agent saw it, and that was 20 years ago. Using any homebuilt stove will void your insurance. Stoves are so tightly regulated now, and they have to pass EPA tests. Any homebuilt stove now would be totally illegal to install or use.

Don said it. If you’re looking for cheap, they make camping stoves but those aren’t legal to install in a house. Maybe you don’t need legal for some reason. Look at Four Dog Stove. Have you considered a masonry stove? I know nothing about designing one, but the materials could be cheap. One of my neighbours is putting one in, and it’s considered to be a chimney for insurance purposes, he tells me.
