Woodworking Plans Q and A's

I want to make decorative switchplate covers, but I don’t know where to buy the wood. I plan on cutting most of them into custom shapes w/my husbands rotozip. I saw where someone used 1/8" thick wood but not what kind. Any ideas on what kind, if this is the right thickness, and where to buy it? Should I just go to Lowes or Home Depot or a craft store? Thanks.

  1. Chirp Says:

Any fine-grained hardwood should work – balsa, poplar, birch, walnut, etc., but oak is hard to cut – and 1/8" is a good thickness. A craft store is more likely to have the correct size and type of raw wood than a home center, but you never know. If you’re going to paint your plates and you’re willing to fill the edge voids, you may be able to use thin plywood – it may be cheaper than all-wood.
    Good luck.
