I’ve got a lot of time on my hands now that summer is here, and I really want to make an awesome project in the shop. I might make a chess board, so if anyone has designs, that’s groovy. Any ideas are welcome!

I wouldn’t start with a chess board…unless you’re set on it. For all it’s simplicity it’s actually one of the hardest thing to make. This is because it’s pretty damn dangerous to be dealing with parts that small. Additionally, any defects in dimensioning whatsoever will show up in the final product. You’ll need to have a perfectly matching light or dark filler to fill in the gaps when you’re done. Additionally, clamping that up is pretty involved.
I’d recommend something larger to start with because, contrary to expectations, larger projects actually hide newbie defects a lot more. Be sure to use push sticks on any table saw work and do not put your fingers or hands between the fence and the blade.
You can always have a local shop cut up ply parts for you as good plywood parts require an especially large table saw set up.
I actually had a lot of luck just using the guide in the source as it is pretty thorough going over the basics. There’s a lot of things you just can’t imagine ahead of time that’ll make the project a lot more frustrating without some sort of concise guide.
Have fun, and be safe above all…never work late and never drink beer while you’re working on it. Except when you get to the staining/finishing phase

I made several chess boards and then chess tables. I used woodsmith magazine as a guide.
The plans are in issue 83 page6 and issue132 page 6.
I probablly made 6 chess bnoards and 2 tables for myself and friends and they all loved them. They take time and patience, but are a great project.

I like to build cool projects with PVC Pipe. It’s actually easier than working with wood.
