Get some 1×2′s
- Screw one to each of the side rails, down about 2" from the top
- Use the rest to span left to right and support your mattress and/or box springs. Either screw them to the ledger strips or run a strip of nylon webbing down each side and staple to the stretchers to keep them spaced how you want them.
If you have a queen or king sized bed, you will want center support. Buy a 2×8 or 2×6 and use that to support the rails in the middle. You can simply secure it with a little scrap of the 1×2′s to make a channel on the headboard and footboard.

The easiest would be to make a platform bed.
Get some 2×10 or so and cut them to length (measure your mattress size.)
Get bed corner connectors like this: http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=5783&filter=bed they will make it easy to disassemble and move some day.

Paint or varnish the exposed parts.
